7 Rules that Spanish Translators Must Follow for Capitalization

A translator has a number of responsibilities on his shoulders. He is responsible for conveying the message (in its truest sense) from the source language to the target language. The experienced translators learn every small bit with due course of time. But, if you are a beginner translator, you might be unaware about tiny details, like the capitalization rules. Take any language for example, like Spanish. The Spanish language has different cases when words are not capitalized, as in the English language.

Thus, if you are looking for a speedy growth in your career, then you must know some golden capitalization rules that are as follows:

1. Nationality

When it comes to capitalizing nationality, it should be noticed that the words derived from countries should not be capitalized. However, whenever you use the name of any city or country, then they are generally capitalized.

2. Religions

Another important fact that translators must keep in mind is that the religions are not capitalized in Spanish. Whenever, you receive an assignment where religion name is used, then the religion must not be capitalized. This is what a professional Spanish language translation company looks for. Such small details would give a boost to your career.

3. Ordinal Digits

Suppose you have to translate the word ‘Charles the Eighth’ from English to Spanish. While translating make sure that the ordinal digit i.e. ‘the Eighth’ would not be capitalized in Spanish.

4. Titles

While addressing people, some titles are used. These titles are not capitalized in Spanish. But, if somewhere you see the abbreviations of the titles, then keep in mind that the abbreviation would be capitalized, for e.g. Srta. for señorita and Sr. for señor.

5. Languages

You may also find the names of languages in your translation assignment. So, if this happens, then you should keep the language names in small. They should not be capitalized. No matter, which language name is written in the assignment, like German, Russian or any else, you know what to do. In a Spanish localized text, the language names must not be capitalized.

6. Days or Months

You might also come across different days or months name. So, while you are translating such a text that includes months (like January, February etc) or days (like Monday, Tuesday etc), then remember that the lower case letters would be used. To deliver a perfect translated and localized text, the lower case letters must be given prior attention.

7. Titles of Books, Movies Etc

When it comes to capitalizing the titles of plays, movies, books etc, then keep this in mind that only the proper nouns and the first word would be capitalized. It is the mark of authentic Translation services in Spanish language and applicable in formal written Spanish.

Conclusion

The capitalization rules are very essential for making it sure that the translated copy is also a localized one. Simple translation would not speed up your career growth. Translation plus localization is all what you need. Thus, next time when you translate, keep track of such small details.
