  • Clean Ganga Mission to Start At 10 Cities

The Modi government is going full steam ahead with its Namami Gange’ project that is an effort to bring notable visible change to the Ganga waters. The Intensive river surface cleaning will be initiated at 10 identified cities with a Bhuvan Ganga mobile application.

This ISRO-backed India specific GIS tool would ensure real-time public monitoring of the Ganga surface pollution on ground situations. The government is intended to invite global tenders for river surface cleaning, this week at 10 cities Garhmukteshwar, Sahibgunj, Haridwar, Varanasi, Kanpur, Mathura & Vrindavan, Allahabad, Patna, Kolkata and Nabadwip.

The idea behind this project is to collect the floating debris and clean off the Ganga river surface, so that people can feel a visible difference in Ganga’s cleanliness levels. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is of a view to start a complete work package that includes Ghat cleaning, river surface cleaning and drain-river confluence at the 10 priority locations.

In order to arrest floating debris and tackle river surface pollution, the trash skimmer machines, River surface cleaning boats and trash booms will be used at all these 10 cities.

To ensure that the cleaning is actually taking place, real-time monitors will be installed at 118 locations on the Ganga River, where a nallah meets the river. 10 of these monitors have already been started on pilot basis.

Further, the government is set to launch a Bhuvan Ganga app that will serve as a medium to capture real-time images of the Ganga by the public via smartphones and uploaded immediately, in case of any river surface pollution. Once the image is uploaded, the contractors in charge of the river surface cleaning at that specific location will be held accountable.

The Namami Gange project (worth Rs 20,000-crore) was approved last week by the Union Cabinet. With primary thrust on pollution abatement and building sewerage infrastructure, this project has special attention on the critical Kanpur to Varanasi stretch.
