In order to make mobile telephony the most omnipresent and potent tool for agriculture administration, governance and development, the government is planning to introduce interactive voice response systems along with several other methodologies to integrate the buyer-seller platform via mobile apps.

According to Raghav Chandra, (the Additional Secretary, Agriculture), since the use of information technology has become more pervasive in the modern times, therefore it is perhaps the only way through which ‘the next green revolution’ can be achieved.

He adds that the national e-governance plan that has been carved out in the field of agriculture includes the use of private kiosks, Internet, touch screen kiosks, common service centers, agri-clinics, kisan call centers, mass media and integrated platforms.

Talking about the importance of agriculture in India, he said that 56% of the entire India’s population is connected with agriculture. 13.7% of India’s GDP is contributed from agricultural sector.

While concluding he says, that India constitutes over 17% of world’s population, out of which 8-9% of the world’s population is connected to the Indian agricultural industry.

Thus, the need to launch agriculture-specific apps has increased significantly.
