As a part of Make in India scheme, India will soon manufacture trains for Queensland, Australia. Bombardier is the transportation giant in Canada that won a supply order for the rail coaches to Australia. These coaches are reported to be manufactured in India. Since 2012, Bombardier is into export of rakes, metro cars, bogie frames, and various other components for projects in Saudi Arabia, Australia and Brazil from the Savli unit.
According to reports, the Queensland authorities gave a $4.1 billion order to Bombardier for delivering 75 new six-car trains that would be manufactured in Gujarat, India.
The India unit would be executing the orders worth $1.5 billion for exporting the coaches to Australia till 2019. However, the share of bombardier for that order is $2.7 billion.
Furthermore, it is also expected to generate almost 500 full-time jobs.
The design of the rail coach is based on the Adelaide EMU train. The new trains will provide improved security, capacity and passenger flow.
This project involves the supply of 75 EMUs (Electrical Multiple Units) with maintenance period of 30 years.
The construction and depot design would be subcontracted to Laing O’Rourke.
