History

Some areas of this park were once the part of Tehri Garhwal (the princely state). To make them less vulnerable to Rohilla invaders, the forests were cleared and a part of the princely state was ceded to the East India Company. In the 19th century, efforts were made to save the forests under Major Ramsay. It was in the early 1900s that several Britishers suggested setting up of a national park. Further, in 1936, Hailey National Park was created, which got renamed as Ramganga National Park in 1954–55. It was again renamed as Corbett National Park in 1955–56. The new name was in the honor of Jim Corbett, a well-known wildlife conservationist.
